Chaga mushroom UK: wild-harvested capsules, powder and coffee
What is Chaga?
Chaga, or Inonotus obliquus, is not a typical capped mushroom. It is a sclerotium, a dense, hard mass that grows on birch trees. From the outside it looks like a lump of burnt charcoal. Break it open and the inside is a warm golden-orange. It is a functional mushroom and is not psychoactive.
Chaga has a mild, earthy taste with a hint of vanilla. It is not bitter like Reishi, which makes it one of the easier mushrooms to drink.
Where Chaga comes from
Chaga grows in cold northern forests, wherever birch trees thrive. Our Chaga is wild-harvested rather than cultivated. When you buy Chaga mushroom in the UK from us, you are buying a mushroom gathered from its natural habitat, then made into capsules, powder or coffee.
Its striking charcoal look and its home on birch trees make Chaga one of the most recognisable fungi of the northern forests. It is very different from the soft, capped mushrooms found in a supermarket, and that difference is part of its appeal.
Chaga tea: a northern tradition
In Siberia, Scandinavia and across Northern Europe, Chaga has been brewed as a tea for generations. We do not sell Chaga chunks, but Chaga powder makes a quick version: stir it into hot water, add milk or honey if you like, and drink. If you are weighing up tea against capsules, our blog has an article comparing the two.
Chaga capsules
Our Chaga capsules come in pots of 90 vegetable capsules for £25.80, so they suit vegans. Like all our products they are lab tested, and the Chaga capsules are also lab tested for heavy metals. Capsules are the simplest format: no measuring, no mixing and no taste. A pot of 90 also packs neatly into a bag, so it is handy for travel, the office or a weekend away. See how they compare with other species in our mushroom capsules collection.
Chaga mushroom powder
Chaga mushroom powder is one product in two sizes: 60g for £26.99 or 120g for £44. Its mild flavour makes it easy to use. Stir Chaga powder into coffee, hot chocolate, smoothies or porridge, or make the quick tea above. The 60g bag is a sensible first buy, while the 120g bag costs less per gram. Our full mushroom powder range has other mushrooms to mix it with.
Simple ways to enjoy Chaga powder
Chaga's gentle, vanilla-tinged flavour makes it easy to drink. For a warming mug, whisk a little Chaga powder with hot milk, a pinch of cinnamon and a spoon of honey. For a cold option, blend it into an iced latte or a banana smoothie. It also stirs well into overnight oats the night before, so breakfast is ready to go.
Because the flavour is soft, Chaga pairs nicely with other mushroom powders that are stronger in taste. Some people mix it with Reishi to take the edge off Reishi's bitterness. Keep your powder sealed in a cool, dry cupboard and always use a dry spoon.
Chaga in your coffee
Immunity Mushroom Coffee blends ground coffee with Chaga and astragalus root, a traditional herb. It is ground, not instant, so it brews in a cafetière, filter machine, moka pot or pour-over, hot or iced. A 60g bag costs £18.49. Find it with our other blends in the mushroom coffee collection.
